I can only imagine that you are confused between HostGator and DreamHost? That’s why you are here. Choosing a reliable host can save you a lot of time and money down the tracks.

I’ve been hearing a lot of talks about these two hosting providers on different forums and blogs. That’s why I decided to create this HostGator vs DreamHost comparison review.

In this post, I’ll be comparing the features and performances of these two hosts and help you find the right host for you.

Let the battle begin.

HostGator vs DreamHost Credibility – Who Has Been Around Longer?

HostGator was founded in 2002 by Brent Oxley, who was then a student of Florida Atlantic University. As of 2014, HostGator host over 9 Million websites according to INC. Magazine.

DreamHost is a Los Angeles-based web hosting provider, founded in 1996 by Dallas Bethune, Josh Jones, Michael Rodriguez and Sage Weil. Their hard work has been paid off and now DreamHost has become one of the popular hosting providers.

User Interface

HostGator hosting plans come with cPanel as control panel. I have personally tested HostGator cPanel and I must say that it’s very easy to get used to. If you are someone who is not very technical, you wouldn’t be having any problem using cPanel. And, with video tutorials by HostGator on YouTube, it is very easy to learn the features of cPanel.

DreamHost, on the other hand use custom web based control panel. This is a big let down from DreamHost. cPanel is used by most hosting providers and if you are a cPanel lover, you would find this very disappointing.

Note: DreamHost do not provide their web based control panel demo.

♦ WinnerHostGator. Comes with cPanel which easily beats DreamHost’s web based control panel.

Customer Support

Support is available 24*7*365 at HostGator and you can contact them via telephone, live chat and ticket system. The quickest way to get support is through telephone. Live chat representatives are also easily available and HostGator usually take around 10 hours to respond to tickets.

DreamHost doesn’t offer telephone support, although you can pay a small premium on your monthly fee to have a member of staff call you. The extra fee also covers live chat support. Otherwise, all support is via email and/or ticket – there’s no phone number. This is very disappointing considering that HostGator doesn’t charge a single penny for telephone and live chat support.

♦ WinnerHostGator. Unlike DreamHost, HostGator offers free telephone and live chat support.

HostGator vs DreamHost Features & Pricing

HostGator offer three shared hosting plans which are Hatchling Plan (the cheapest), Baby Plan and Business Plan. The Hatchling Plan comes at a very low rate of $3.95/mo, but allows you to host only a single domain. The baby plan offers all necessary features and comes at a price of $4.95/mo. This would be the best choice if you want to host multiple sites. HostGator allows you to pay monthly, half yearly and yearly.

DreamHost offers only a single hosting plan that costs $8.95/mo. DreamHost doesn’t allow you to pay monthly, which means you have to pay for a whole year to get a hosting account.

If you are creating your first site, DreamHost would be the wrong choice as you cannot pay monthly. HostGator allows you to try its hosting just for $0.01 which is a great deal. Click here to grab the offer now.

Performance & Reliability

HostGator host their customers’ sites on Dual Xeon servers at Dallas. top-of-the-line Dual Xeon in their data centers at Dallas. The data centers are well equipped and connects to 10 backbone providers.

DreamHost use power-efficient AMD processors to host their customers’ websites. Dedicated servers on DreamHost include dual-core and quad-core processor options.

HostGator and DreamHost are known to give out best performances. Of course, being called as the best hosting providers, they have to. That’s why many pro bloggers recommend these hosting providers. But, which one is the best of the two? Let’s find it out by performing a couple of performance tests.

Now, let us compare the performance of the three hosts. Just click on the links below to check out the results of the tests you want.

HostGator Vs DreamHost – Benchmark

The next test we performed between the three hosts was GtMetrix benchmark test. You can clearly see HostGator has better response time and page speed score. HostGator loaded in just 1.70 seconds, whereas, DreamHost took 2.39 seconds to load.

HostGator Vs DreamHost – Speed Test

Speed is an important factor to consider before choosing a web host. So I’ve used Pingdom speed testing tool to run speed tests on both HostGator.com and DreamHost.com.

HostGator loaded in under a second which is absolutely amazing. DreamHost took around 1.25 seconds to load.

♦ WinnerHostGator. Loads in less than a second. DreamHost’s performance is also good.

My Recommendation – HostGator vs DreamHost

Based on comparison of features and results of the performance tests performed, HostGator beats DreamHost by outperforming it in every department. DreamHost’s loading speed and uptime might be as good as HostGator, but without cPanel, Free Telephone Support and Monthly hosting plans, DreamHost wouldn’t be the right choice for many.

Why you should choose HostGator over DreamHost:

  1. HostGator offers monthly hosting plans and you can try it just for $0.01 (first month).
  2. HostGator has free telephone support and live chat, whereas DreamHost doesn’t offer it for free.
  3. HostGator comes with a customized cPanel, but DreamHost uses web based control panel which can’t be compared with cPanel.
  4. There is a hard working security team that will keep your files secure from hackers and viruses.
  5. Sites hosted on HostGator load quicker than sites hosted on DreamHost.

Why you should choose DreamHost over HostGator:

  1. If you don’t like cPanel, choose DreamHost.
